Medical spa training prepares you to work with advanced skin care treatments in clinical settings. In Florida, this training leads to the Facial / Skin Care Specialist credential—the state's esthetician license that qualifies you to work in medical spas, dermatology offices, plastic surgery practices, and traditional day spas.
What Medical Spa Training Covers
Medical spa training teaches both foundational skin care and the clinical skills you'll use in a medical setting. You'll learn:
- Skin analysis and treatment planning
- Chemical peels and advanced exfoliation
- Microdermabrasion and dermaplaning
- LED light therapy and microcurrent
- Pre- and post-procedure care for cosmetic treatments
- Sanitation, safety, and infection control
- Client consultation and contraindications
- Product knowledge and treatment protocols
The curriculum balances theory with hands-on practice. You'll work on real clients under supervision, building confidence before you step into your first job.
Florida's Training Requirement
Florida requires 220 clock hours of training from a state-licensed school to become a Facial / Skin Care Specialist. That's the credential you need to legally perform esthetic services in the state.
After completing an approved program, you register with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Registration is straightforward: you submit your certificate of completion, pay the fee, and receive your credential.
Hybrid Format: Online + In-Person
MedSpa Institute's program is hybrid: 149 hours online and 71 hours in person. The online portion covers anatomy, physiology, skin conditions, contraindications, and treatment theory. You complete it on your own schedule.
The in-person portion happens at either our Miami or Tampa campus. This is where you practice: facials, peels, microdermabrasion, waxing, and the hands-on skills employers expect you to know on day one. You'll work on classmates and real clients in a supervised clinic setting.
Hybrid training fits around your life. You don't need to quit your job or relocate. You study online when it works for you, then complete your hands-on hours over a concentrated period at campus.
What Happens After Training
Once you're registered as a Facial / Skin Care Specialist, you can work anywhere in Florida that offers skin care services: medical spas, dermatology and plastic surgery offices, resort spas, salons, or your own practice.
Many graduates start in medical spas because the work is clinical, the pay is competitive, and there's room to grow. You might assist with laser treatments, provide pre- and post-care for injectables, or run the skin care side of a cosmetic practice.
Some graduates continue their training with certifications in specific treatments—like our Botox & Filler Certification for licensed professionals who want to administer injectables.
